It has been a tough week for me personally. So when my mother invited me to go to the Atlantic Beach art walk, I jumped at the chance to go to the unique town center, right on the beach. The town center comprises boutiques, eateries and bars. The weather was perfect for a relaxing night at the beach. The temperature was in the mid 60’s, with a slight breeze and overcast.
Our first stop was the gastropub, Poe’s Tavern. Poe’s tavern pays tribute to the troubled writer who inspired the pub. They cover the outside sitting area in ferns and vines, while the inside is spacious and airy. Pictures of Poe adorn the inside walls and antique books round out the decor, including what appears to be an original manuscript of The Raven.
Poe’s Tavern offers craft beer, decent wine, and phenomenal food. We shared a plate and left satisfied. Our choice was the Rue Morgue, a hamburger topped with a fried egg and served over a huge mound of potato straws, and Poe’s famous drunken chili. They call the chili that because they make the chili with a brown ale.
As a literature fan, and especially of Edgar Allan Poes, I enjoyed the decor. The rooms are dimly lit, giving the inside a Poe like vibe. The bathrooms (yes, the bathrooms) are very interesting. The bathrooms are lit with red lightbulbs, pages of Poe’s work adorn the wall, and a male voice reads poetry aloud over the loudspeaker. This was a fascinating touch of elegance to round out the entire mood of the place.
Afterwards, my mother and I strolled through the streets where multiple corners offered live music. The scene was eclectic, with various musical genres playing together, yet not clashing with each other, and people selling their artwork and wares. Of course, we ended up on the beach, listening to the ocean’s voice, which is more majestic than any sound man can produce.
It was a relaxing time and I plan on attending the next art walk. Who knows? Maybe I’ll sell coffee there next time. I hope to see you there!
